A Coffee That Reached the World Stage
This is also the same variety that captured global attention through Honoka Kawashima, New Zealand Barista Champion, who took “Maria” — her name for Maragesha — all the way to the World Barista Championship in Busan 2024, placing 4th in the world.
Chosen for its syrupy texture, floral intensity, and layered sweetness, the coffee became central to a routine built around simplicity, connection, and storytelling. Together, Honoka and Luis Anibal introduced Maragesha to the world stage—not as a novelty, but as a coffee with genuine depth and identity.
Origin & People- Luis Anibal Calderon
Villa Betulia is often described as a living coffee museum—home to some of the world’s rarest and most experimental varietals including Sidra, Wush Wush, Chilli Bourbon, Yellow Pacamara, and now Maragesha.
Luis Anibal has spent decades pushing Colombian coffee forward through cultivation, innovation, and relentless curiosity. Coffee isn’t just farming here—it’s exploration.
And Maragesha may be his most exciting discovery yet.
Processing – Where It Gets Interesting
For this lot, Luis Anibal and the Cofinet QC team opted for a Natural process with short fermentation.
The goal wasn’t to overpower the variety with processing—but to preserve clarity while enhancing sweetness and texture. Cherries are selectively handpicked, carefully sorted, and dried slowly to maintain structure and aromatic complexity.
It’s controlled, intentional processing designed to let Maragesha speak clearly.
In This Cup
The first thing you notice is texture.
Heavy-bodied, coating, syrupy.
Then comes the layered sweetness—dark chocolate, cherry liqueur, and subtle herbal complexity wrapped together with remarkable clarity. The acidity is bright, but balanced by a deep, boozy sweetness reminiscent of dark stone fruit and liqueur chocolates.
As the cup cools, notes of brownie batter, cacao nibs, and bittersweet aperitif emerge. The finish dries gently like high-percentage dark chocolate.
This is not a delicate Gesha.
This is Gesha with weight.
Why We Like It
At Society Coffee Roasters, we’re drawn to coffees that challenge assumptions while still remaining grounded in quality and drinkability.
Maragesha feels familiar and completely new at the same time.
It carries the florals and elegance of Gesha, but with the structure, texture, and intensity of something far bolder. It’s a coffee that rewards attention—but never feels performative.
Brewing
This coffee loves higher extraction and higher strength.
- Best as filter with slightly higher dose ratios
- Excellent as a rich, syrupy espresso
- Push extraction carefully to unlock texture and cherry liqueur sweetness
Under-extracted brews lean sharp and fresh-fruited.
Well-extracted brews become deep, coating, and incredibly layered.
Villa Betulia Maragesha Natural isn’t just a rare coffee.
It’s a glimpse into where coffee can still go when curiosity, trust, and craftsmanship meet.
